Nov 2 2013: Hong Kong DISNEYLAND

Saturday!

Abby and Greg got ready about 6, gone by 7. But I was awake before that and just tired to sleep for a while until our alarm at 8, and Katie and I finally got up for the day. We were ready to go fairly soon- I made the silly choice to only bring my jeans and so I prayed it wouldn’t get too hot. Then we headed outside to look for breakfast. But the shops below had closed up and wandering around the streets, it looked more like an American city than anything else- meaning no street food! So we finally just headed out on the handy-dandy metro to head to Disney and hope that we found something along the way.

Which of course didn’t end up happening. After two or three transfers, we were on the Disney line and heading under the famous ‘Hong Kong Disneyland’ banner sign. It wasn’t too crowded yet and I don’t know if it’s from our lack of sleep or what, but we were super excited! Jumping around! Lots of pictures! We bought tickets hurriedly- all cast members are Asian because they need to be able to speak Cantonese and English. Other than that, it’s just like Disney in America.

And we walked in at 9:30- which confused us until I remembered the obvious- main street always opens up early! So we grabbed a map and circled everything we really wanted to do, checked for the times of a few shows, walked around a shop or two to see if we wanted to buy anything. Then we headed back to the square where a little girl got to cut the ribbon with Belle and Snow White.

And we were free to go! We basically took off running by Adventureland- then through it, whoops, wrong turn- and all the way up to Toy Story Land! One of Hong Kong’s special spots. And there was no one around. At all! No one. It made us a little nervous as we walked and came upon RC Racer. We got stickers for being the first ones there, and it was only the two of us on the roller coaster ride!

Katie spent the whole time screaming because to my surprise, she doesn’t always do well with roller coasters. So she was screaming and I was laughing at the absurdity of the situation!

Then the Toy Soldier Parachute Drops! That wasn’t as extreme [neither of them were extreme at all, really now…] That was pretty fun and we were absolutely ecstatic and giggly as we ran through to Grizzy Mountain Mine Chutes or whatever, because there was no one around there. We ran through the line and there may have been someone else on the roller coast with us, but I’m not too sure. It started out slow but then there’s a turn where you go backwards and after that, it speeds up and is a ton of fun! We loved it. We ran through line again to go again!

Finally over to Mystic Point, the cool part I really wanted to see. Unfortunately the ride was closed for a little, so we wandered through the tiny Maze of Wonders spot before playing around by Grizzly again, taking pictures and finally finding the Mystic Point ride open in the mansion thing- super cute ride! A little like the Haunted Mansion ride, but you’re on flat ground. Katie got surprised a few times, but I played around with it- it’s kind of obvious but super fun- and we went over and did it again right away! There was a slightly different route and that was awesome, too! We loved it!

Then we went to Fantasyland for Mickey’s Philharmagic show- which I absolutely love! I think I watched it two or three times my last day working at Walt Disney World a few years back. Katie loved it, too! Yay! Then we wandered to the Mad Hatter’s tea cups, which was a blast, and then to It’s A Small World.

I’ve always been a rule keeper but it was only us in a boat behind this couple in the front row. So the moment our boat took a turn around the bend and no one could see us [we think], we started skipping back through the rows of the little boat to sit in the very back. We laughed, we sang along, and loved the ride.

After that, we checked the time and realizing we still had a while, we checked out Tomorrowland for the UFO ride and Buss Lightyear’s Astro Blasters [and yes, like everybody, she beat me and gloated about it], before crossing to Main to grab ice cream, the one thing we bought there for the day in the food category. Then we went in line for the show ‘The Golden Mickeys’ we waited for a while longer before flooding in for the show.

Which was awesome! Songs, acting, characters, shows, and more! We loved it! That was such a blast, a great show. Luckily the kids crying at the start were quieted and it was fun. The talk show host talked in Cantonese but the songs were in English. Which was more than good enough for us! It was so much fun!
Afterwards, we’d pretty much did everything we wanted, so we went back and did a lot of them over again. Philharmagic once again, and then Grizzly Mountain- we did that two more times in the single rider line which was definitely worth it, and much less shorter than the other line, woohoo! That was pretty awesome. Soon we were pretty satisfied and ran into the parade as we headed through Main, shopping a little bit- we bought charms- and then we got me a Birthday Button. Then realized we were out of water so we ended up walking back to Adventureland for water which was FREE!

I know, it was just like being back in America. There were even nice western toilets and everything, it was so awesome!  We loved it, it was great!

And we were walking out by about four o’clock. Back through the train system and we sat down across the block from our hostel by the Art Museum to meet with Abby and Greg. They took a little while, but that was more than okay because our feet were exhausted! We wanted nothing more than to enjoy a good sit. And we even made wishes in the little pond behind us, right hand over our left shoulder like the Trevvy fountain!
Soon we finally met with Abby and Greg, and headed off to the ferry! They had found out about an Italian place on another island so we thought we’d check that out. It took us a while to find the right spot- stupid confusing signs- but eventually we got to the Star Ferry and it cost less than $3HK and we boarded, and it was super awesome.

The view with the sunset was incredible and even awe-inspiring. I love it, sitting and watching the sun fade into tomorrow. It was just remarkable, the coloring of the clouds… It was so beautiful!

We landed and tried to sort out where the place was, but it got super confusing and there was a sign about Italian Stuff but all we saw were shops and it looked sketchy and weird and we kept looking but couldn’t find it anywhere and Katie and I had nothing to eat all day so we decided to give in to this pizza corner, and they did the same. We grabbed drinks next store- soda and I got chocolate milk! The main craving I’ve had since being in China, I know it’s silly. Anyways, Katie and I each bought our own HUGE slice of vegetable pizza [it looked the most appetizing that they actually had], and they were like at least 2 Pizza Single slices from Costco size, I swear. Huge. I don’t know how I even got that all in my stomach.

I paid for that, though, my stomach was a little upset for the rest of the night. But the food was worth it, seeing as I hadn’t had anything of substance but some ice cream and candies at Disney. So we took the metro back towards our place, but stopped a few places short to check out this night market Abby had looked up.

That was pretty fun, which some honest Hong Kong tourism fun, plus the basic knickknacks you find everywhere in China. It was pretty sweet! We didn’t have a lot of money to spend, but it was fun to go through all the time. It was a bit small, but we didn’t have that much energy. Although we did end up walking the place about three times before leaving. By the time we did, we both had a Hong Kong tourist shirt [Katie’s the classic I <3 HK and mine was “I am lost in Hong Kong” with a slight map of the area].

Then we caught the metro back to our place and went next door to the cool shop, where we didn’t end up getting anything and lost Abby and Greg. Finally we wandered back into our building with the little place alive. We wandered around and ended up trying some food. Katie got this flavored dried dough candy thing, a little block that looked like crusty bright fudge- in green, pink/red, or white. She bought it in white. It wasn’t too bad, actually! And then I bought a samosa, curry and green peas and stuff inside. Pretty good, though a little spicy. Very tasty overall.

We still hadn’t found Abby or Greg but decided to go up the elevator and hope they had ended up going back to our rooms. Luckily, that’s what they had done! They opened the door and soon we were all passed out after the very fun day that we’d had!
