Oct 16 2013: Gremlins and Obesity

Wednesday!

I stayed in bed until shortly after 8, and it was glorious. I took a slow start on this chilly morning, so Katie went ahead of me to prepare for her class before lunch. Eventually I made it to the school, being eagerly greeted by children passing through to music lessons. They’re so cute outside of class, all of them! Just precious!

Soon I was fiddling on the internet as usual, having only two classes later.

We got lunch after her class [her first graders are pretty out of control still], and then back to the office where we planned at our Grade 9 class lesson. The piece we had talked about health so I covered healthy topics and Katie covered obesity [which left her laughing most of the time].

Her second class after she left came for me. Again.

Crazy children. Absolutely adorable, don’t get me wrong, but since it’s so hard to get class started in the first place for Katie, I try not to get dragged out of the class. But they sat me on my chair and rushed me out once before and they’ve been trying to do it since.

They’re everywhere! Like little gremlins, half my size [I know, tiny], pushing and tugging and nearly toppling me over. It makes me so worried about falling over on them seriously, which would be terrible. It’s so hard and they obviously don’t get the ‘no’ when I tell them. Plus they’re cute so I’m laughing already.

Anyways this time- unlike the last 2-3 times- they got me out of the classroom. I thought this time it might help if I tried to make them look for Katie. Except I didn’t even know where to find her from her last class or anything, which made the whole situation. I got dragged super close to their door and it was pretty awkward as a teacher, being pushed around like that and the older kids seeing. Not the best. Still working on it- but none of the people, old or young, really take us seriously so it makes me feel like there’s nothing I can do about it, no matter how hard I try.

Eventually they caught on I wasn’t about to go, and I pointed towards Katie who was piled upon by kids, and eventually escaped to the office!

I fiddled around before doing my own class. Grade 3 Class 1, one of the decent ones. Usually. I don’t know what it’s been about this week, but everyone’s been pretty crazy! I went through a slide which the kids enjoyed, learning about the word “doing” a bit more. Then I got them to pull out their books and work on a picture book piece in their English book. They were so confused the poor kids. I think one of them got it, but the others just drew about other books… I still gave out a few stickers in the end.

Then to dinner, which wasn’t too eventful. They had some super spicy rice which was kind of fun, and some weird cookie-biscuit but nothing too thrilling.

Activity Time looked like it had been cancelled, though we kept peaking out below to the playground but the kids weren’t really out or playing so we ended up staying in our slightly-warmer office. Our A/C also covers heat, thank goodness. Katie figured out how to turn it on, yay!

Then to International Class. Nicole told us the class is not liking the dvd’s so she’s decided against them, so we didn’t end up using it or anything. But they do like video excerpts of other shows, so we have to find a way to tie that in- and actually find a piece, since my own videos on my thumb drive don’t work on Chinese computers for some reason.  We reminded them at the beginning if they’re too noisy again there will be no time for a video, which helped reign them in a little, though they talked still a bit.

They enjoy the slides when they get interesting though, if they recognize something cool. I brought in an actor and actress and one girl knew them, which was pretty impressive. Then Katie’s piece on obesity brought in some interesting pictures which kept the kids talking a bit. We’re working on talking slower, but it’s hard. And we’re coming up with more words to teach them, but “statistic” may have been a little too much for us to explain right on the spot.

After that we were finished up for the day!

The night was very chilly, we need earmuffs! And mittens and boots, seriously… Anyways it was a lovely stroll and we found ourselves belting ‘Like a Virgin’ inside the elevator.  In turn, we ended up watching Pitch Perfect shortly after with delicious hot drinks before reading scriptures and heading to bed!
