This was a quiet day.
The past renters had ‘One Thousand Secret Senses’ by Amy
Ran, I think it was, and so I started in that. Definitely reminds me of my time
being here, everything that happens in that book is pretty much making perfect
sense [about china, not the ghosts and such], so that was pretty funny!
Katie and I eventually went to school, had a nondescript
lunch, and planned out our classes a bit! I just covered a bit of weather with
Grade 4.
Oh, in the middle of the week they took the chairs from
their paired rows into square blocks of four or five… it was annoying. So
annoying, I couldn’t walk around or anything! And half the kids couldn’t come
up front or anything okay and would be climbing on the desks and such, it was
ridiculous!
Grade 4 went all right, although the kids are getting a
little bold and going through things on my thumb drive, so they tried watching
one of my videos a few times. Always goes haywire and no, the kids don’t always
want to listen to you especially if class hasn’t officially started or
anything! It’s a little crazy, but I managed to get control and class worked
okay.
Grade 3 Class 3, they all wanted their books and I lost the
CD slide that goes with it, which sucks, but they’re keeping one in that
classroom for me [or it could have been mine, I don’t know], and one of the
kids put it in as I was starting class. And so I figured hey, if that’s what
they want to do, then we can do that!
So that’s how class went- we spent most of the time
listening to this slide on Unit 7 or 8, where they were given instructions on
what to draw on that page. Some kids started with monsters, which was… you
know, creative, but took up a ton of space and not supposed to be there, haha.
So they used a ton of white out- the kids love the stuff- and would fix it. I
tried to get them to listen, and eventually started writing out the
instructions on the board.
Now as much as I love the English language, and I truly do,
but we do have more than enough words and that can cause mixed signals and
totally confuse the poor kids. One of the instructions was to draw a bookshelf.
Easy enough, except they didn’t understand so I drew it out, and they shouted
“Bookcase!” at me, so I explained they still kind of count as both, but I did
change the wording in the end because some kids were still so confused.
In that class, there’s this little kid. He’s the smallest
one in the class, I keep forgetting his name, but he tries so, so, so hard!
He’s trying to understand, he’ll come up to the front and look at my powerpoint
and try to answer my questions [even though he should be in his seat, but he’s just adorable!], and
show me every little thing he adds in his workbook. I spent like three minutes
trying to explain there are two t’s in potato, which was super funny although I
felt so bad for him. But hey, it’s his favorite food! Haha. But seriously, he’s
precious. I have to learn his name…
After that, we had dinner, and then activity time. I played
and talked with a few kids, but watched most of the time- growing up I thought
it was always weird when adults tried to play with me and my friends, so if
there’s already some game going on, I usually let them continue and play with a
few kids on the side and cheer on the kids with their jump ropes. Katie got a
few more to hang around her- she got a whole line going so they could twirl in
her arms, their favorite. One of her boys spent some time playing with me, and
he was adorable as well!
Afterwards, the day was over so we went home, read
scriptures, and went to bed!
