Halloween!
We actually wore a normal amount of make-up, if not extra,
for this fabulous day. We got dressed
up, packed up all of our candy and costume pieces, and headed out the door. On
the way to school we had to stop to pick up more candy for me and 30 rolls of
toilet paper for Katie. We may have
looked a little ridiculous going up the street- but at least we didn’t have our
wigs on yet!
Haha, so we headed in and immediately kids were all over us
in the office, running around in search for candy and demanding some and such.
Abby and Greg had wisely posted up a sign on our door, except have the kids
chose to ignore it until we had to walk over and point it out again. It was a
little crazy- no, a lot.
Eventually they were a bit more calm about it, although
after lunch we had them coming in and out to mostly show off their costumes and
such before we tried to get them to take their naps like they’re supposed to be
doing. It was a bit funny, actually…
Finally I had a class to teach, grade 4. I went through two
Halloween slides. They were going nuts, at first, by the way- I literally
couldn’t get class started for about ten minutes because they wanted to see my
costume, show off theirs, play with their costume pieces with their friends,
and fight over them a bit. It was insane! Like I said, I managed to get through
two fun slides until I finally just turned on Casper Meets Wendy for about 15
minutes and passed out a bit of candy.
Afterwards I had my Class 3 Grade 3. I’m supposed to work in
the book with them. I wasn’t planning on doing anything with it that day but
the books were already out as I walked in. The kids were going crazy with
costumes all over again- super tricky! So I let them work in the book for about
fifteen minutes, just review for a while until I knew I was pushing their
limit. About that time, the school photographer came in!
Not knowing what else to do, I pulled out my Halloween slide
and drew it out as long as possible while the photographer was there! Haha. But
it went super well, I thought, better than with Grade 4. They had a lot of fun
with the pictures and sorting it out. Shortly after the photographer left, I
turned on the movie and passed out candy.
And I was done teaching for the day! I reminded them about
the party downstairs. By then, it was supposed to start in ten minutes. I
rushed back to the office, checked over the silly poster I had made, grabbed
the candy and everything, and with Katie we rushed downstairs to the gym.
No dinner, it kind of sucked but we were very distracted for
the next long while. We cleared out part of the gym and set up our games. I was
doing ‘Pin the Smile on the Jack-O-Lantern.’ I put it on the wall, brought out
a scarf for a blindfold, and hurriedly put tape on the back of the smile. I had
made a dotted line around the mouth- a large area- and my rule was that if it’s
half way in, then you get a piece of candy. I didn’t have too much, not huge
amounts, so I couldn’t spoil everyone with a piece you know?
Also had a chore of a time making sure the other kids
weren’t shouting out instructions! I had four boys together who were absolutely
impossible. They all went through and didn’t come back, the stinkers. Then one
of the older boys was taking pictures and that was a little distracting, but I
kept things running pretty smoothly!
Time was running out, so I stopped telling them they
couldn’t feel the wall, and if the smile was anywhere within the dotted line,
then they could have candy because a good few didn’t get any. Mine was the last
one going, I think, so Katie helped me pass out left over candy and close up my
booth. Then we grabbed a few funny pictures, passed out a little more candy to
stragglers, and finally had to tell them no, we had no more candy, and finally
were able to head up to our office to put things away.
We cleaned up and ran out of there. Then we cleaned up the
house and got comfortable. By then, I had a very sore and swollen throat,
something that had been building all day [some remnant of Katie’s cold during
the week, I suppose], but we had agreed to do a mini Halloween Party at our
house so we couldn’t go to bed or anything just yet.
Nicole arrived first, with chips to share- we had chips and
mushrooms to share, plus it was at our house- then Abby and Greg arrived and we
started our movie, Signs. Turns out, very few of us really appreciated the
movie at the end, but all the same, it was fun. Magi came for a little bit, but
then she and Nicole left because they had to teach early in the morning.
Finally the movie ended and we called it an end, and
everyone headed to bed because it was so cold and late! About midnight by then…
Definitely a crazy Halloween by the end- we were all tired of the holiday. A
first for me: not cool…
